Hi all, so, I went ahead and bought both, the ASA E6B and the Pooley's CRW-5W, and here's what I think, a comparison (if anybody's planning to buy):
The primary mechanisms on the computing side and the usage is just about the same. No big difference.
Pooley's CRP-5W:
Computing: has additional Sp.G markings that makes it very easy to calculate weight to volume.
Wind side: Does not have any markings for off-course correction, flight plan information, or crosswind table
MaxSpeed: The CRP-5W, the card can be turned around and then you have it to 900.
Manual: The CRP-5W manual is detailed and corresponds to exam level questions on the wind side. I would give both companies an F– grade for the use of language!
Feel: Plasticky, not smooth. The Pooley's CRP-5W has a sharp edge on the wind side, and if you are not careful, you'll get a nasty horrible scratch.
ASA E6B
Computing: No Sp.G calculation markers, so calculations more complex, and you need to memorise the various Sp.G. I asked for computation guidelines directly from ASA, no reply!
Wind side, the card (at least the colour E6B) from ASA has very nice helpful markings for off-course correction, flight plan information, and a cross wind table.
MaxSpeed on the E6B is 260. The reverse of the card has the details I mentioned above.
Manual: The manual is limited in the content in my opinion. I would give both companies an F– grade for the use of language!
Feel: Hands down the ASA E6B colour one. Really smooth movements, neat layout.
SUMMARY: Both are good. I prefer the CRP-5W for the Sp.G calculations, but holding in hand, hands down the E6B.
If I had an ideal device in mind, it would be the ASA E6B Colour but WITH Sp.G markings, the wind arm, but definitely keep the wind side card with the all the information. With all the information capabilities missing, I would go for the CRP-5W
