Dear all,
seems like most appropriate place to post.
The collective and great wisdom of this forum would be much appreciated:
AITA...(am I the a***hole)?
after a well-announced intention to join an ATZ in a provinicial airfield (A/G) and acquisition of airfrield info (and PPR of course) I stayed out of the pattern initially and observed as was a v busy day. Entered a downwind join making sure plenty of space for a training aircraft in front (let's call the Aircraft C) . Heard someone else's intentions on the airfield freq to join d/w (let's call them Aircraft D). I can see them circa 500m the right of me (L-hand pattern) just as I'm turning left onto d/w. Ostensibly they're behind me in the D/w and therefore will land after me.
I continue d/w and extend 5 secs or so as traffic ahead Aircraft C) slower and training and Iwant to give them plenty of space.
I turn onto base and look to my right at the airfield only to see the aircraft who joined behind me (aircraft D) cutting in on base having turned before me. I turn final and they are 50m in front and are landing as the other aircraft in front (Aircraft C) is just touching down. This landing aircraft does a TnG and its U/c is barely off the tarmac when Aircraft D puts it down.
Aircraft D has barely touched the tarmac and I'm at 300ft so I go around.
No harm done. All good.
I felt as though it was rather poor to cut in like that - I barely extended and on paper was pretty much on the pattern pathway anyway.
However I didn't announce that I was extending briefly for the A/c in front; that much is my error and probably confused Rushing Raymond behind me...
Still seems a shabby thing to have done and ended up cramping the circuit and causing a very tight picture - if C had had a blow out or PIO and crash etc then D would have hopefully gone around but it would have been very tight - didn't seem like there was much wiggle-room.
Happy to be told to man/Woman up and learn but also wanted to vent my annoyance (which may be entirely by mine own hand caused).
didn't help that I had a last minute tailwind shift for return landing and landed very long and fast and had a skiddy stuttery end to the day (thanfully didn't end up in a hedge) but fuming at myself for now just going around... Being under time pressure to get home to do school run a factor (what would a go around have cost, 4 mins...?!) as was fatigue and possibly some light lingering 'almost 100% but not quite' viral element.
Swiss cheese model, CRM, non-technical skills and situational awareness are huge factors in my real daytime job, and they all came into play today. Very interesting to see it in another world and almost fall foul of it.
Happy flying all,
