As it stands, my ambitions for the time being are purely recreational. Albeit, working for an airline, I'm currently at the junior end of working towards a professional career which I'm happy with. So cost is also a great factor, as well as my health. At the time being, we are not there for a Class 2 medical but an LAPL medical is very much in reach from what I've been advised by a few AME's.
I've always wanted to fly and with a modest salary in the high 30's and an employer generous with the time off, I wanted to go for my NPPL and fly microlights. I've done an experience flight earlier this year in a flex wing a/c but currently exploring my options with some 3-axis lessons instead.
I'm also attracted by the cost element. Quite frankly it is affordable flying and in budget. Even if I expect to do more hours than the minimum - the hourly rate of £150-£160 per hour is miles cheaper than £180- £200 + an extra £50 odd instructor fee per hour for a PPL/LAPL.
I can see that with an NPPL, I can get my SSEA rating and fly heavier a/c including Piper's and Cessnas with 3 hours additional training + Nav + GST. Correct me if I'm wrong but an LAPL in all but name more or less (?).
This I'm quite keen on. Again, I'm quite keen to maintain flying as a hobby as opposed to career ambition for the time being. (One day I might like to but there's more than a few things in life that need to 'slot' into place first) Like the majority of GA pilots, I can't see myself flying much outside of VFR.
I'm seeing a lot of microlight schools but not too many (if any) flying clubs that allow you to join as a member and self-fly hire suitable aircraft - as far as microlights are concerned. They're all more 'conventional' aircraft like your Pipers and Cessnas.
I was wondering if anyone had any advice or could point me in the direction of clubs offering microlight hire post qualification.
I'm trying to gague how realistic my ambitions of NPPL (M) + SSEA are so I'm not disappointed later on down the line. I know some people get shirty with the idea of NPPL's and would hope that aero clubs didn't discriminate between a PPL and an NPPL holder with the correct rating?
All input appreciated.
