In the winter months with humidity over 80% my Robin with an 0-200 suffers badly from carb icing. I've had the prop stop on landing multiple times in the past. Last Sunday we developed rough running in the cruise and in the circuit but completed the flight safely, though we were looking for nearby airfields, just in case.

Looking at the Metars en route and using the icing chart, we were on the edge of 'Severe Icing' so this wasn't too surprising. But, when flight planning, as the Metars are from ground level, should we adjust the temperatures on the chart to reflect conditions at our cruising height? The reported conditions on Sunday afternoon (14/07) didn't seem to give too much cause for concern.

Also, when the rough running starts is there anything I should be doing, apart from adding power and carb heat? I have found that adjusting the power setting can make the engine run smoother - for a time.

Perhaps I should re-engine with a Lycoming?
