Two years ago, I hit my half century. I didn't get divorced (I did that in 2018). I didn't buy a Porsche 911 (I did that in 2019). But there seemed to be an itch that needed to be scratched, and I didn't know what it was. I have done lots of aircraft rebuild work over the years (with the able help of a good flying friend), and these included a Turbulent, and several Kitfoxes (my aviation weakness). My current "main stead" is a lovely Jodel 1050 (thanks @JodelDavo), and it ticks every box, and I really love being able to take the boys/wife flying together, and we are enjoying it, a lot, and flying more than ever.
I was always rather critical of the SSDR "thing", but when I hit 50, I realised I was getting a bit fat. Not really fat, but 100 kgs, at 6 feet 1 inches, and that wasn't sitting comfortably with me.
I needed a reason to get slim, and stay slim. What was my passion? Kitfoxes. So, after losing 35 lbs of weight since November 2024, I've just bought a Model 1 Kitfox, with the intention to SSDR it, and because it's marginal, a lot relies on me staying "racing snake" status to be able to tick the boxes.
Is it of interest to witness a 52 year old bring home (tomorrow) a very very tatty old Kitfox, and turn it into something rather unique, to keep in the barn at home, and to fly on a lovely evening like this one, in a matter of minutes after supper?
I have some quite radical plans to achieve the weight limits, and this doesn't just include me mainly eating salad for twenty years...
This will definitely be my last project (I know they all say that), but this one is unique. The aim with this one is to create the tattiest, lightest, most fun. most basic and most stripped down SSDR ever.

Never criticise a man until you’ve flown a mile in his loafers.
