So, temporarily grounded by injury and gale force winds, I thought I would pay a visit yesterday. Haven't been for years. The Horrible Histories banners all over the website should have been a clue.
I think giving the responsibility for redesigning the old Battle of Britain hangar exhibits to a couple of lightly informed Year 4 teaching assistants was possibly a mistake. Truly awful.
The rest of the place looked like it was on the way out. The old bomber hall and fighter hall looked neglected and bare, a number of airframes were disassembled, waiting for collection I assume, there weren't any signs to explain what was happening. Grouping of the aircraft was a bit random.
The Air Sea Rescue MTBs were pushed together looking as though the scrapman was imminent.
The target audience now seems to be the under ten year olds, the grounds look scruffy.
Given the amount of new high density housing in the area, the end looks not too far off, the site must be worth millions.
Maybe its time to let the aircraft go to good places like Brooklands, Duxford and the like, and let the air back under the wings of the fabulous TVAL WW1 replicas.
Before Barbie and Ken do the next makeover
