Dear Moderators,
I hestitate before writing this openly, but I know that my sentiments are shared by many and an open letter may encourage others to make their feelings known to you. In short, I feel that the level of snide sniping has become unacceptable in a public arena and misrepresents the overall generosity of members of this forum, the magazine parent and the flying community at large.
A product of this is an unintended development of cliqueness that we claim to refute as I know personally of 2 tyro pilots that I have promoted this forum to and have been put off by the tone of some of the recent postings in the GA area, the fly-in section and the bar.
It is a shame that the value of this forum is tarnished so much by the actions and attitudes of a very few members.
In my opinion this inhibits open questions for fear of ridicule or sneer and therefore fails to promote flight safety. On a personal note I find it nasty, infantile and leaves me with a sour taste whenever I see it, no matter the target.
All that may be needed is a quiet word or maybe some other action, that's a matter for your judgement.
Best regards,
Mark Litherland
