Hi, hoping someone knows what’s going on here. Sorry, it’s a long one.


I have my main flying group, and I also sometimes fly with an ATO (hoping to soon get the sign off to rent one of their aircraft).

This aircraft is parked a fair distance, about 250m, from the building. Their procedure is to go out and check and fuel the aircraft, then come back into the building to fill out the tech log, then go out again and go flying.

Because I have a medical condition that makes walking painful, I asked the head of training for an alternative way of doing this that means I don’t have to do the walk three times before each flight. I didn’t get a response on this. Instead my account on the booking system was blocked without noticed. When I noticed this a while later and asked, I was told it was because I needed to talk to the head of training before my next flight, but they couldn’t tell me what about. I went ahead and booked that next flight.

I also have anxiety. I had to cancel that flight because I couldn’t handle having the conversation hanging over me as well as a flight to do. I informed them of this the night before, and I asked if the conversation could instead be done by email or phone call. They said no, and it was only when I mentioned that failure to accommodate my reasonable request for a phone call would amount to discrimination that they said yes to a phone call.

In that phone call, I was told that because I’ve said I have anxiety, I’m unfit to fly and they need to inform the CAA, and I can’t do any flying as PIC with them until they get the all clear from the CAA. Even though the CAA are well aware of my medical conditions -getting my medical took over a year and involved multiple costly specialist reports.

Is what they’re talking about an actual requirement? Do they really have to notify the CAA any time anyone discloses a medical condition to them, and prevent that person from flying, regardless of whether the CAA are already aware of the condition?

This feels absolutely insane, and I feel as if I’m being punished for asking for the adjustments that I need.
