Having wanted to try this little "shortcut" for a while, finally did it at the weekend.
Fairoaks were very helpful in arranging with Heathrow whilst on the ground and was pretty much zero RT on Heathrow Radar, making an interesting change from Farnborough West.
Overall a very straightforward way to transit North through the zone, with the caveat that south of Ascot you needed to keep a keen eye out for a place to glide clear should the unfortunate happen.

Unfortunately, didn't spot any drones on our travels
