As a current PPL/SEIR holder I've always fancied doing ME rating (just for personal development purposes). Seems the rules state that I need to do another IR test in ME to hold the IR privileges but it strikes me that I could fly IMC and conduct approaches using IR(R). I can't seem to find anything that would appear to contradict that thought....Seems then that the only privilege that is being held back is flight in Class A airspace...

Surely the ME course furnishes you with all that's required to fly a ME aircraft with OEI....and the IR covers you for IMC flight...

Can someone with a bit of knowledge (CFI perhaps) explain the reasoning why the holder of a SEIR who successfully completes a ME rating then has to take a SEPARATE MEIR flight test when all the elements are already held????

Seems a candidate for some removal of gold plating IMO.

Out of interest do FAA SEIR holders have to go through the same procedure??
