Yes, if you’re reading past the first sentence or so - you ARE a window geek.

I’ve just arrived at an old townhouse hotel on Corstorphine Road in Edinburgh. Inbound is too late to go any further, so I always book a room in an old building with charm for the night that’s close by to the airport - rather than a concrete rabbit-hutch. I love old British architecture, especially 19th Century townhouse.

In a place I’ve stayed before - but this time in what was clearly a “more important” room than the wee dookits I usually get.

2 flat sash windows in the bedroom making a small bay & another in the bathroom, which - for someone who used to be in that business & even spend his own money renovating 3 massive bays for his own place BITD…I was pretty impressed to see the cords were good, the brass furniture wasn’t covered in 75 years of paint & they even opened/closed quite smoothly. Some furniture is clearly new!

Clearly not *properly* done as the upper & lower sashes don’t seal the way they should; & I wouldn’t dare drop the top sash (if you know, you know) - but I think it’s the first time in 25 years I’ve found somewhere like this by hazard.

The sash & case - ok.

But the internal shutters…

Literally *nobody* has those anymore.

I was cock-a-hoop when I saw that, and even happier to see that at some point in the past few years someone had gone to the effort to renovate them.

Yep, they then got ignored & painted over again a few times - but you’ve no idea the pleasure it gives to a window geek to pry out the shutters (in this case with 2x teaspoons & then the brass room number tag as the spoons gave up) & bask in the long forgotten glory of properly shut shutters popped out from their recesses.

Well, not exactly properly closed - as there’s the obligatory 1960s effin’ coax cable in the way of one of them…but if it wasn’t for that, I’m sure I wouldn’t hear any of the traffic outside.

Sorta wish I’d be around tomorrow for the staff to see what I’ve done tbh, but they don’t really seem to be the types who actually appreciate the architecture their property came with…

It might seem mad, but I really do worry that the younger generations will have zero clue that most British buildings didn’t start with carp double glazing…and stuff like sash & case was actually pretty amazing for its time…
